Currently there are three waterways available for tourism in Beijing, and the boats are in service from April to October every year. This offers another way of sightseeing in Beijing. Tourists to the Yuyuantan Park can take a boat in the port of Bayi Lake and enter the south gate of the Summer Palace by waterway; tourists to the Beijing Zoo, Beijing Exhibition Center and Beijing Aquarium can reach the summer Palace by taking a boat in the port of Back Lake.

Kunyu River (Yuyuan Pond ← → Kunming Lake)
The Kunyu River waterway is between Yuyuan Pond and Kunming Lake. The boats depart from Bayi Lake which is located in the Yuyuantan Park, then take you to the Central Television Tower, Binyuyuan Port, White Dagoba of the Beihai Park, Linglong Park, and finally arrive at the Summer Palace- the largest imperial garden.

You can take such a boat in the port of Bayi Lake, in the port of the Summer Palace, Binyuyuan Port, or in the south gate of Yuyuantan Park. A one-way trip takes about 50 minutes, and a round trip is about 2 hours long. In particular, a gaily decorated pleasure boat in a European style provides various activities for tourists: birthday parties, tea parties, cocktail parties, wedding ceremonies, art performances, Karaoke, and small dance parties.

Comments and Questions

The truth about these boat rides is that the rules change a lot. I went last Sunday and could not get a ticket because there was an (unannounced to the public) boat race. So no tickets to public. Secondly, the boats were not the old style Chinese boats but boring enclosed fiber class boats. Have to sit inside. Best way is to go to ticket office and ask them inside the park. If you call you will,I bet, get wrong information.

Hi Lewis,
which pier did you go?
i'm considering take a boat, but I don't want to go if what you mentioned is ture.

I will live in Shangri La Beijing which is at Zizhuyuan Road, I've heard that you can take a boat from a nearby kind of pier to go to Summer Palace. Is that true? If yes, how exactly can I do it?

Is Yuyuantan Park inside Summer Palace? I have read that there is a boat service that goes to the Summer Palace from Millennium Monument or near Beijing Zoo. Is it possible to go to the Zoo using the Subway. Thanks.

I want to take the boat from zizhiyuan to the Summer Palace and eventually back again. When do the boats leave at Zizhiyuan? Is it possible to book a trip? How much is the trip? Are there discounts for students?
I have the same questions for the Shicha lake course.

The operating time of the boats in Zizhuyuan Park is 9:00~17:00. it's possible to book a boat to Summer palace, ad the cost vary from CNY 50 to CNy120 per hour. I'm not sure whether there are students tickets.

Am interested to take the one-way Changhe boat cruise to Summer Palace. Is the Line 1 the complete route from start to end? What's the departure time? Where can I buy the ticket to the boat cruise?

Yes, it is a complete route. There is a ship every hour from 10:00 to 16:00, departing from both terminal. You may just buy the ticket at the Imperial Dock of Beizhan Houhu or Nanruyi Dock at Summer Palace on arrival.
