Peking Opera, Beijing

Beijing is the cradle of Beijing Opera, acrobatics, cross-talk, and story-telling. Beijing Opera is the quintessence of Chinese culture. It combines singing, dancing, music, art and literature, which endears itself to people home and overseas. Chinese acrobatics has won many awards at an international level and has amazed audiences throughout the world. In a cross-talk, performers use different ways to make you laugh. They may tell jokes, imitate, show stunts or sing in exaggerated ways. It is so comical that audiences can't help laughing. Story-telling (Pingshu) is deeply loved by local people. As a common practice, the teller has a paper fan in one hand and stands behind a table that has a block on. The block is used to call listeners' attention when he comes to the showdown of the story. With particular cadence and actions, it is quite interesting.

I will be visiting Beijing in January and I am interested in acrobatics & martial arts. What shows would you recommend that are in or near the Chongwen District?

Red Theater in this area is a fince choice to watch the Martial Arts.

For acrobatics, Beijing Acrobatic Troupe in Tianqiao is suggested. It is in Xuanwu District, but just around 3.8km from the Red Theatre. It is easy to commute between.

I will be in Beijing next week and would like to watch Shadow Puppetry. Are there shows during weekdays? How much and what time does show start and end? Thank you very much.

both are very excellent shows.
Tianqiao is more traditional and the price is cheaper, but chaoyang is modern and new.

hi Linda,
the time of the shows are: 11:30 - 12:20, and 15:00 - 15:30 on Saturdays and Sundays.
you don't need to book the ticket in advance.
i'm not sure whether you can touch or hold the shadow puppet, but you can find many stores selling shawdow puppet on the street, and you can buy some if you are intereted.

I think Beijing Tianqiao Acrobactics Theater is a good choice, where there are acrobatics starting at around 19:00 daily.

It seems that the performance schedule for December has not come out yet. You will have to wait for a few days.

Hi, Jack
You can buy the tickets from the theater or you can book them from some commercial website.
