The bicycle is a good way for you to get around Beijing, as it is environmentally friendly and provides healthy exercise.

At peak times on the busy roads in Beijing, the bicycle is the fastest and most convenient vehicle for a short journey. If possible, do not refuse to attempt at riding a bicycle for a short trip in the inner city. Most hotels in Beijing offer the service of bicycle hire, remember that a cash deposit will be required.

Construction in the urban city led to the road space for bicycles being reduced, and some of the existing bicycle tracks often occupied by motor vehicles. This caused not only enormous pressures on energy and environment, but also the serious and frequent traffic jams. However, a special line for bicycles has been established on the roads in Beijing, so that travel by bike is now much safer.

Bicycle Renting

At present, about 5,000 public bicycles in Beijing are available for people to rent, and about 31 bicycle-rent outlets in Beijing are in operation with the authorization of the government. Beijing Hotel has 100 bicycles for renting and is equipped with POS machines. People who rent bicycles here can pay by bank cards or cash. In the future, all of the rental outlets will be equipped with POS machines.

By signing a contract and paying CNY 400 as a deposit, you can rent a bicycle by year, by day or by hour, and keep it by yourself or in the parking lots of rental outlets. Customs can apply for changing a new one or having reparation for free. A long-term let bicycle can be returned back in a different rental outlet.

Renters are responsible for looking after and repairing the bicycles, while they do not bear the reparation of any malicious damage. If a bicycle is lost in the parking lot of a rental outlet, the renter will bear the responsibility; if it is lost due to the lessees' default, the deposit will be detained.

A special map of the bike rent outlets will soon be made, providing convenience for people. It is reported that by the 2008 Olympics, about 50,000 public bicycles in more than 230 rental outlets will be ready for renting in Beijing.

From December 1, 2007 onwards, all of the new bikes in China will have different 'identification numbers' in the frame. The 15-digit number will contain the code of the rental company, the type of the bicycle, the manufacturing date, and the number of the production line.
