Population
According to the result of the Fifth National Census by November 1, 2005, the total population of Beijing is approximately 15.38 million, much more than 3 million of which are non-native people.
Area
The total area of the whole city is about 16,807.8 square kilometers (6,489.5 square miles), 62% of which is the mountainous region covering an area of 10,418 square kilometers (4,022 square miles), while 38% is the plain which is about 6,390 square kilometers (2,467 square miles).
Landform
The high northwest and low southeast make up the whole of Beijing's terrain. Its west is the Mt. Taihang and the north is the Mt. Yanshan. Between these two mountains is the Nankouguan Ditch. Together they form a semicircular ridge curving to the southeast and giving rise to the popular name 'Curved Beijing'. On the whole, Beijing's topography is remarkable for its grandeur.

Beijing is located at north latitude 39o56' and east longitude 116o20', majestically reposing on the northmost part of the North China Plain; to the northwest lies Shanxi Province and Inner Mongolian Plain, and towards the east is the Bohai Sea. Hebei Province, with the exception of Tianjin to the southeast, accounts for the rest of Beijing's immediate neighborhood.
